Not pictured, Wendy Koopa’s early sprites also had a red head and shell with yellowish skin.īlue Bowser with a greenish body and yellow hair nearly matches his original design in SMB. However the shell and skin tone are swapped in color. Iggy Koopa’s SMB3 sprite also had a blue shell and head, and yellow hair. The Bowser in Brawl has yellow skin, making him more similar to Bowser’s present design rather than bronze or orange.īowser retained all 3 swaps and gained 2 more. The brown one appears to be original to Smash, but fits the monochrome theme of characters like DeDeDe. White Bowser most closely resembles Morton’s original design. Morton had a white and gold shell, and noticeably darker skin than any other Koopaling. This swap is also said to resemble Dry Bowser, but Dry Bowser’s body is white, and shell is black making it a less likely candidate, but worth a mention. Though black Bowser debuted in Melee, Morton’s modern redesign has the black shell and dark gray body to match. The game also only retained only two swaps, black and white, while all others were replaced or given significant updates. Green Bowser resembles his more monochrome origins, which were also reflected in early American cartoons. It nearly exactly matches a swap from Mario Golf as well. Pink Bowser may invoke Bowletta, Bowser’s possessed form from the first Mario and Luigi game. The new red Bowser, in addition to the previous references, also resembles Roy Koopa’s sprite in SMB3. Like many of his other swaps, the new blue Bowser appears to originate from Mario Golf. Dark Bowser from Bowser’s Inside Story has a similar body, but black hair. Princess Peach made her Smash Bros debut in Melee, and has always sported a Smash Bros original design. Her initial appearance is based on her look in the N64 era, mostly unchanged from her original Super Mario Bros artwork. However it is much more detailed and embroidered. Pieces of the costume are also changed, like the waist ribbon becoming a corset. Melee brought 4 additional swaps for players to choose from. Yellow Peach is the Smash series’ first costume swap. She wears Daisy’s colors, gloves, and flower shaped jewelry, and has her tanned skin from the N64 era. She even swaps the Smash Bros corset for a proper waist ribbon.
